Urban Adventure Race

Columbus, OH

MAD COW THANKS!

The Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race on June 27, 2009, saw 48 racers spread out among 19 teams braving the urban jungle of Columbus, OH. Course choices were plentiful and teams had the opportunity to see areas of town such as German Village, the Short North, the Ohio State University, Upper Arlington, Grandview, and Downtown. Navigating among the normal pedestrian and vehicular traffic was enhanced as Comfest added significantly to the challenge around the area of Goodale Park. But a hot day and the challenges of the city didn't deter racers from tackling the Mad Cow head on.

The race started with a half mile prologue where one team member from each team ran to collect his/her team's paddling clue sheet. From then, it was onto the rivers for the paddling section. While the current on the Olentangy River was stronger than anticipated, Jake1 and Mickey were not fazed as they obtained all five checkpoints, although only four were required. The biking section was next, with twelve total checkpoints and the requirement that teams obtain at least eight of them. This time, Jake1 (again), Me & My Boys, Lone Goose, and Thunder Road fought the urban obstacles and the rising temperatures to clear all checkpoints on the biking leg. Finally, the trekking section, with its sixteen checkpoints, would be the deciding factor. Team WeMo, saving the best for last, was the only team to clear all sixteen checkpoints. With 29 total checkpoints, they just squeezed past Lone Goose (28 CPs) and Northerners to win the 2009 Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race!

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who braved the hot weather Saturday for the Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race! We thank you all for a fun race! Special thanks to Sabo's Camping and Confluence Park Restaurant for partnering with us for this event! Please check out their services and thank them for helping make the Mad Cow a success!

Also, thank you to Todd Agee from COAR (Central Ohio Adventure Racing) for providing the sweet bike racks that racers used and for helping out at the start/finish area. And last, but far from least, thanks to our volunteers: Vanessa Hill (Pre-race photos), Alyson Hover (COSI CP), Brad Hunt (Prologue and Sabo's CP), and Brian Suntay (Sabo's CP)! The volunteers helped make our jobs as race directors easy! Thanks!

OVERHEARD ON THE COURSE...

"Canoeing sucks, man."

"Feeling fine...it's just survival from here on."

"We're going to do the course twice!"

"(regarding the bike leg) I only cried once."

"(regarding Comfest) Comfest was a keeper...we need to go back there!"

"(regarding Comfest) My son's going to be jealous that I was there and he wasn't."

"Hell yeah, I'd do that again!"
